University of Ottawa – The Desmarais Building AV


Challenge:

A new building was to be constructed. The university team established a framework for a competitive AV systems integration tender and for overall project implementation.

Our challenge was to define a final systems design (rudimentary design framework provided by client) enabling each classroom to provide a comprehensive array of audio-visual support capabilities, as well as to propose based on how much could be integrated within a compressed time line. The overall scope included just over 40 classrooms plus one high profile Multi-Purpose multi-function room.

IAV Provided Solution:

Interactive Audio Visual was awarded the major portion of the overall contract, and most specifically the highest profile portions. We were awarded the contract primarily based on our reputation of excellence for AV Systems integrations, as well as how we approached the implementation plan. To us, our provided solution was the “logistics” aspect of our proposal as much as it was the technological or financial offering.

Since rudimentary A/V systems concepts had been provided by the University at the time of tendering (framework), we were able to adjust final systems designs quickly. Our designs incorporated equipment IAV was providing plus that of equipment being provided by the client. IAV’s portion of this project included 38 multi-media classrooms plus one large and unique Multi-Purpose facility which could work as a presentation or meeting area as well as a live performance entertainment facility (musical productions etc).

Our approach was based on economies of scale from an integration perspective. For us the challenge was in deploying a multitude of rooms where repeatable designs were being implemented. Therefore we focused our “solution” more on how to task teams to implement specific phases of integration activities and do so concurrently in different area’s of the project. This was project planning and ensuring task lists were kept updated. The project management was our key differential, and remains one of our key differentiators in the marketplace.
